Chapter 16- Walking away from Jane

"What do you call that..infatuation..Yeah..that is the right word." said Raul. Every detail of that day was etched into his brain like an Etch a Sketch.
Sitting in a crummy diner, Raul looked out at the street. The street drenched in gloom. The faded figure of skyscrapers outlined the distant horizon. High up above, the clouds lit up in purple and orange. The heavens had begun its foreplay for an intense rain tonight. The street was dark like the tea he was drinking. Ghostly figures moved about the street, hurrying as if haunted.
"Raul, I am sorry, it ended up this way!" said Fabrice.

"It's okay, I knew how its gonna end, because I was working against my intuition, all the way from day one on this." replied Raul.

Few months back, Raul was on a date with Jane; a few months after Jane started working with a bank in Ryazan. It was a December with the wintry sun, shining into the brightness of the day. The sunshine and cold, the sparkle and the ice, somehow warm even when the north wind bites. Raul drove almost an entire day to reach Ryazan to meet Jane. On his way to meet her, he bought a nice bouquet of red roses for her.

He reached early at the restaurant where they had planned to meet up. It was a small cafe named Sweet Chariot, dimly lit with pleasant music and a nice ambience. Raul sat inside the car, waiting for Jane to arrive at the restaurant. He had texted her as soon as he had arrived. He sat inside the car with his eyes closed, listening to the Christmas music flooding from the FM.

The knock on the window woke him. He got out of the car to greet Jane.
"Hey!!! you are here!" he said giving her the bouquet.
"Hi!"
"Its snowing..let's get inside the cafe" he said.

Back at the hotel at Ryazan, Raul was looking at the emails from his office, when he got a call from Jane.
"Hello Raul"
"Hi"
"Raul, I don't think our relationship will work out."
"Okay!" It was as if Raul saw that coming.
"It's that..I am sorry to say this..but I am going to get back with my ex...."
Raul interrupted her in the middle of her conversation..
"See..I can understand..you don't have to lie..to get away.. It was nice knowing you. Thank you!" saying that he disconnected the call.

Between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM ; his flirting with his new found emotion of love was over.

..
..

"Fabrice, I told you the first day itself over the phone! Do you remember that?" Raul talked to Fabrice over the tea at diner. It was raining heavily outside.
"Yes, I feel guilty about pushing you into a relationship. I had told her everything about you and told her not to...." said Fabrice looking devastated.
"See, its not anyone's fault. She had a fantasy and I just don't fit into it. Back then, when her life was in a turmoil, I was the compulsion of emotion, as I told you before, the events in her life had made me a sort of hero. Right now! she is better placed and she can afford better choices. Its as simple as that. Thinking about it, there is no passion in it. It was just an arrangement." replied Raul.

Sometimes, we replay the events in our head and wonder what was the right words to say. Moments like these are  discomfort, that comes in waves, grueling, stealing appetite and sleep alike. It is a shard in the guts that never leaves, though perhaps in time the edges will dull.
Raul understood, that it was just a relationship without the passion. He was learning a few things about himself about the doors in the unknown corridors of his conscience. He was learning, evolving and adapting himself to survive the new feelings.

Restaurant Car

Raul, calmly finished his lunch. It was good and delicious. The couple ahead of the table was cocooned in their own world.
He headed back to his cabin.
